Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification.

I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

I would like all of you to speak in other languages. But I would rather have you prophesy. The person who prophesies is more helpful than those who speak in other languages. But that is not the case if someone explains what was said in the other languages. Then the whole church can be built up.

As in all the churches of the saints,the women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.Or was it from you that the word of God first went out? Or has it come to you only?If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.Therefore, my brothers and sisters, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.But all things must be done properly and in an orderly way.

So you too, since you are eager to possess spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the edification of the church.Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret.

Then Joshua the son of Nun, the personal servant of Moses from his youth, responded and said,“ My lord Moses, restrain them!”But Moses said to him,“ Are you jealous for my sake? If only all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!”

Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and various kinds of tongues.All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they?All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

But the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and consolation.The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
