何則、操方言者、非與眾人語、乃與天主語也。心中雖言妙諦而他人則莫名其妙也。

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Anyone who speaks in a language they had not known before doesn’t speak to people. They speak only to God. In fact, no one understands them. What they say by the Spirit remains a mystery.

For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.

If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;nevertheless, in church I prefer to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.In the Law it is written:“ By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord.So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe.Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are insane?

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together and they were bewildered, because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.They were amazed and astonished, saying,“ Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,Cretans and Arabs— we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty deeds of God.”

Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and that they would attain to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself,

Behold, I am telling you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past,

So you too, unless you produce intelligible speech by the tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will just be talking to the air.There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and none is incapable of meaning.So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be unintelligible to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks will be unintelligible to me.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will tell riddles of old,

and pray in my behalf, that speech may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,

And He was saying to them,“ To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but for those who are outside, everything comes in parables,

My mouth will speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart will be understanding.I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle on the harp.

Beyond question, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.

And Jesus answered them,“ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.

And those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He announced to His servants the prophets.

but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.

“ The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down; a nation whose language you will not understand,

that is, the mystery which had been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been revealed to His saints,to whom God willed to make known what the wealth of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles is, the mystery that is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory;

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebnah, and Joah, said to Rabshakeh,“ Speak now to your servants in Aramaic, because we understand it; and do not speak with us in Judean so that the people who are on the wall hear you.”

For otherwise, if you bless God in the spirit only, how will the one who occupies the place of the outsider know to say the“ Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you are saying?

If anyone speaks in a tongue, it must be by two or at the most three, and each one in turn, and one is to interpret;but if there is no interpreter, he is to keep silent in church; and have him speak to himself and to God.
