何則、操方言者、非與眾人語、乃與天主語也。心中雖言妙諦而他人則莫名其妙也。

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Anyone who speaks in a language they had not known before doesn’t speak to people. They speak only to God. In fact, no one understands them. What they say by the Spirit remains a mystery.

For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.

And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.In the Law it is written,“ By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds?

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.And they were amazed and astonished, saying,“ Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians— we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them.

that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ,

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages

how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power.To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things,

So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,

and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,

And he said to them,“ To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables,

My mouth shall speak wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

And he answered them,“ To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.

these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.

The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, swooping down like the eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand,

the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, said to the Rabshakeh,“ Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say“ Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?

If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.
