For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Anyone who speaks in a language they had not known before doesn’t speak to people. They speak only to God. In fact, no one understands them. What they say by the Spirit remains a mystery.

For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.

If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you;yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, in order to teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.Brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your thinking, but be infants in regard to evil and adult in your thinking.It is written in the law, I will speak to this people by people of other tongues and by the lips of foreigners, and even then, they will not listen to me, says the Lord.Speaking in tongues, then, is intended as a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers.If, therefore, the whole church assembles together and all are speaking in tongues and people who are outsiders or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?

Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven.When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.They were astounded and amazed, saying,“ Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome( both Jews and converts),Cretans and Arabs— we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues.”

Come, let’s go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

They did not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an interpreter between them.

I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery— Christ.

Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed,

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation about Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept silent for long ages

The mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have briefly written above.By reading this you are able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ.This was not made known to people in other generations as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit:The Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.I was made a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power.This grace was given to me— the least of all the saints— to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches of Christ,and to shed light for all about the administration of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things.

In the same way, unless you use your tongue for intelligible speech, how will what is spoken be known? For you will be speaking into the air.There are doubtless many different kinds of languages in the world, none is without meaning.Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.

I will declare wise sayings; I will speak mysteries from the past—

Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.

He answered them,“ The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside, everything comes in parables

My mouth speaks wisdom; my heart’s meditation brings understanding.I turn my ear to a proverb; I explain my riddle with a lyre.

And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

He answered,“ Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.

Now those who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me.

Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

but in the days when the seventh angel will blow his trumpet, then the mystery of God will be completed, as he announced to his servants the prophets.”

The LORD will bring a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth, to swoop down on you like an eagle, a nation whose language you won’t understand,

the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a mystery, a wisdom God predestined before the ages for our glory.

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebnah, and Joah said to the royal spokesman,“ Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak with us in Hebrew within earshot of the people on the wall.”

Otherwise, if you praise with the spirit, how will the outsider say“ Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?

If anyone speaks in a tongue, there are to be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret.But if there is no interpreter, that person is to keep silent in the church and speak to himself and God.
