To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages.

He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.

These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages;

So then, brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid anyone from speaking in tongues.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Does God then give you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law or by your believing what you heard?

And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues.Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they?Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?

What should you do then, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a song, has a lesson, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all these things be done for the strengthening of the church.If someone speaks in a tongue, it should be two, or at the most three, one after the other, and someone must interpret.But if there is no interpreter, he should be silent in the church. Let him speak to himself and to God.Two or three prophets should speak and the others should evaluate what is said.

And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Pursue love and be eager for the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to people but to God, for no one understands; he is speaking mysteries by the Spirit.But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation.The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be strengthened.

( 3: 1) After all of this I will pour out my Spirit on all kinds of people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your elderly will have revelatory dreams; your young men will see prophetic visions.

So if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds?But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or uninformed person enters, he will be convicted by all, he will be called to account by all.

For you can all prophesy one after another, so all can learn and be encouraged.Indeed, the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

They went out and proclaimed everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.]]

These are the final words of David:“ The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man raised up as the ruler chosen by the God of Jacob, Israel’s beloved singer of songs:The LORD’s spirit spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.

‘ And in the last days it will be,’ God says,‘ that I will pour out my Spirit on all people, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’s own imagination,for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come.

Do not treat prophecies with contempt.

while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

‘ I know your works as well as your labor and steadfast endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil. You have even put to the test those who refer to themselves as apostles( but are not), and have discovered that they are false.

for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,“ No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

and when Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.

( He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.)While we remained there for a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a company of prophets was coming out to meet him. Then the spirit of God rushed upon Saul and he prophesied among them.When everyone who had known him previously saw him prophesying with the prophets, the people all asked one another,“ What on earth has happened to the son of Kish? Does even Saul belong with the prophets?”A man who was from there replied,“ And who is their father?” Therefore this became a proverb:“ Is even Saul among the prophets?”When Saul had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.

I tell you the solemn truth, the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing, and will perform greater deeds than these, because I am going to the Father.

And we have different gifts according to the grace given to us. If the gift is prophecy, that individual must use it in proportion to his faith.

Love never ends. But if there are prophecies, they will be set aside; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be set aside.

And the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to them, and he took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but did not do so again.But two men remained in the camp; one’s name was Eldad, and the other’s name was Medad. And the spirit rested on them.( Now they were among those in the registration, but had not gone to the tabernacle.) So they prophesied in the camp.And a young man ran and told Moses,“ Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!”Joshua son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his choice young men, said,“ My lord Moses, stop them!”Moses said to him,“ Are you jealous for me? So Saul sent messengers to capture David. When they saw a company of prophets prophesying with Samuel standing there as their leader, the spirit of God came upon Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied.When it was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they prophesied too. So Saul sent messengers a third time, but they also prophesied.Finally Saul himself went to Ramah. When he arrived at the large cistern that is in Secu, he asked,“ Where are Samuel and David?” They said,“ At Naioth in Ramah.”So Saul went to Naioth in Ramah. The Spirit of God came upon him as well, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah.He even stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel. He lay there naked all that day and night.( For that reason it is asked,“ Is Saul also among the prophets?”)

One of them, named Agabus, got up and predicted by the Spirit that a severe famine was about to come over the whole inhabited world.( This took place during the reign of Claudius.)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.”

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.Completely baffled, they said,“ Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs– we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another,“ What does this mean?”
