To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages.

He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.

So then, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

So then, does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law? Or is it by believing what you heard—

And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, leading, various kinds of tongues.Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles?Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

What then, brothers and sisters? Whenever you come together, each one has a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Everything is to be done for building up.If anyone speaks in a tongue, there are to be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret.But if there is no interpreter, that person is to keep silent in the church and speak to himself and God.Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate.

And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”

Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy.For the person who speaks in a tongue is not speaking to people but to God, since no one understands him; he speaks mysteries in the Spirit.On the other hand, the person who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation.The person who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.I wish all of you spoke in tongues, but even more that you prophesied. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be built up.

After this I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions.

If, therefore, the whole church assembles together and all are speaking in tongues and people who are outsiders or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted by all and is called to account by all.

For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged.And the prophets’ spirits are subject to the prophets,

If I speak human or angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.

And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word by the accompanying signs.]

These are the last words of David: The declaration of David son of Jesse, the declaration of the man raised on high, the one anointed by the God of Jacob. This is the most delightful of Israel’s songs.The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me, his word was on my tongue.

And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.I will even pour out my Spirit on my servants in those days, both men and women and they will prophesy.

Above all, you know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation,because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

Don’t despise prophecies,

At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.

I know your works, your labor, and your endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil people. You have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars.

For they heard them speaking in tongues and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded,“ Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”

One of them, named Agabus, stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine throughout the Roman world. This took place during the reign of Claudius.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven.When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.They were astounded and amazed, saying,“ Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome( both Jews and converts),Cretans and Arabs— we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues.”They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another,“ What does this mean?”
