Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

然今之受罪、即主之所以鍛鍊吾人、以免與世同科耳。

Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

When the Lord judges us in this way, he corrects us. Then in the end we will not be judged along with the rest of the world.

But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said,“ My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you.For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening— it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

The Lord has punished me severely, but he did not let me die.

I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you.For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

Joyful are those you discipline, Lord, those you teach with your instructions.You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked.

That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.

“ But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.For though he wounds, he also bandages. He strikes, but his hands also heal.

Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.

Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick.

No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the Lord or draw near to its God.

Say to them,‘ This is the nation whose people will not obey the Lord their God and who refuse to be taught. Truth has vanished from among them; it is no longer heard on their lips.

“ Why don’t people say to God,‘ I have sinned, but I will sin no more’?Or‘ I don’t know what evil I have done— tell me. If I have done wrong, I will stop at once’?

He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death.“ Or God disciplines people with pain on their sickbeds, with ceaseless aching in their bones.They lose their appetite for even the most delicious food.Their flesh wastes away, and their bones stick out.They are at death’s door; the angels of death wait for them.“ But if an angel from heaven appears— a special messenger to intercede for a person and declare that he is upright—he will be gracious and say,‘ Rescue him from the grave, for I have found a ransom for his life.’Then his body will become as healthy as a child’s, firm and youthful again.When he prays to God, he will be accepted. And God will receive him with joy and restore him to good standing.He will declare to his friends,‘ I sinned and twisted the truth, but it was not worth it.God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light.’“ Yes, God does these things again and again for people.He rescues them from the grave so they may enjoy the light of life.

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.
