So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

余傳基督釘十字架之道、猶太人以為可厭、希利尼人以為不智、

惟我儕宣釘十字架之基督、猶太人視為礙、礙或作可厭希拉人視為愚、

而吾人所傳揚者、乃一被釘於十字架之基督耳。此於猶太人為躓石、於異邦人為愚妄；

but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

But we preach about Christ and his death on the cross. That is very hard for Jews to accept. And everyone else thinks it’s foolish.

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.

but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness,

but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,

but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Gentiles foolishness;

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.

But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews, and foolishness to Greeks,

And,“ He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.

He will keep you safe. But to Israel and Judah he will be a stone that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare.Many will stumble and fall, never to rise again. They will be snared and captured.”

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

Dear brothers and sisters, if I were still preaching that you must be circumcised— as some say I do— why am I still being persecuted? If I were no longer preaching salvation through the cross of Christ, no one would be offended.

Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother,“ This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.

As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.

And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them,“ A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”

So Jesus said again,“ I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did( even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.Many of his disciples said,“ This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them,“ Does this offend you?Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.But some of you do not believe me.”( For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)Then he said,“ That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.

And he added,“ God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”

Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross.

Though I am the least deserving of all God’s people, he graciously gave me the privilege of telling the Gentiles about the endless treasures available to them in Christ.

God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.

And he said,“ Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem:‘ There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’

Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said,“ I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake.

“ And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear,not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all— the living and the dead.He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”

‘ I am the God of your ancestors— the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses shook with terror and did not dare to look.“ Then the Lord said to him,‘ Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groans and have come down to rescue them. Now go, for I am sending you back to Egypt.’“ So God sent back the same man his people had previously rejected when they demanded,‘ Who made you a ruler and judge over us?’ Through the angel who appeared to him in the burning bush, God sent Moses to be their ruler and savior.
