Jews require signs. Greeks look for wisdom.

For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom,

It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.

For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom,

Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered,“ Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”But he answered them,“ An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said,“ What does this babbler want to say?” Others said,“ He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.They took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying,“ May we know what this new teaching is, which you are speaking about?For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.”Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.But he answered them,“ When it is evening, you say,‘ It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’In the morning,‘ It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you can’t discern the signs of the times!An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” He left them, and departed.

Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him.

The Jews therefore answered him,“ What sign do you show us, seeing that you do these things?”

But if I by God’s finger cast out demons, then God’s Kingdom has come to you.

So the woman left her water pot, went away into the city, and said to the people,
