撒但起來要害以色列人；他激動了大衛去統計以色列人。於是大衛對約押和眾民的首領說：『你們去數點以色列人、從別是巴直到但，把結果帶來給我，我好知道他們的數目。』約押說：『願永恆主使他的人民比他們現在再增加一百倍。但我主我王啊，他們不都是我主的僕人麼？為甚麼我主強要這樣？為甚麼使以色列人陷於罪過呢！』但王的話勝過了約押；約押就出去，在全以色列來回巡邏，然後來到耶路撒冷。約押將點閱人民的數目呈報大衛：全以色列能拔刀的有一百一十萬人；猶大能拔刀的有四十七萬人。
