But Aaron and his descendants offered sacrifices on the altar for burnt offerings and on the altar for incense as they had been assigned to do in the most holy sanctuary. They made atonement for Israel, just as God’s servant Moses had ordered.

But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Aaron and his sons after him brought the offerings. They sacrificed them on the altar of burnt offering. They also burned incense on the altar of incense. That was part of what they did in the Most Holy Room. That’s how they paid for the sin of Israel. They did everything just as Moses, the servant of God, had commanded.

But Aaron and his sons made offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense for all the work of the Most Holy Place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Only Aaron and his descendants served as priests. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, and they performed all the other duties related to the Most Holy Place. They made atonement for Israel by doing everything that Moses, the servant of God, had commanded them.

“ You are to make the altar of acacia wood, seven feet six inches long, and seven feet six inches wide; the altar is to be square, and its height is to be four feet six inches.You are to make its four horns on its four corners; its horns will be part of it, and you are to overlay it with bronze.You are to make its pots for the ashes, its shovels, its tossing bowls, its meat hooks, and its fire pans– you are to make all its utensils of bronze.You are to make a grating for it, a network of bronze, and you are to make on the network four bronze rings on its four corners.You are to put it under the ledge of the altar below, so that the network will come halfway up the altar.You are to make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and you are to overlay them with bronze.The poles are to be put into the rings so that the poles will be on two sides of the altar when carrying it.You are to make the altar hollow, out of boards. Just as it was shown you on the mountain, so they must make it.

“ You are to make an altar for burning incense; you are to make it of acacia wood.Its length is to be a foot and a half and its width a foot and a half; it will be square. Its height is to be three feet, with its horns of one piece with it.You are to overlay it with pure gold– its top, its four walls, and its horns– and make a surrounding border of gold for it.You are to make two gold rings for it under its border, on its two flanks; you are to make them on its two sides. The rings will be places for poles to carry it with.You are to make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.“ You are to put it in front of the curtain that is before the ark of the testimony( before the atonement lid that is over the testimony), where I will meet you.Aaron is to burn sweet incense on it morning by morning; when he attends to the lamps he is to burn incense.

He must do with the rest of the bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; this is what he must do with it. So the priest will make atonement on their behalf and they will be forgiven.

Aaron is to make atonement on its horns once in the year with some of the blood of the sin offering for atonement; once in the year he is to make atonement on it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD.”The LORD spoke to Moses:“ When you take a census of the Israelites according to their number, then each man is to pay a ransom for his life to the LORD when you number them, so that there will be no plague among them when you number them.Everyone who crosses over to those who are numbered is to pay this: a half shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary( a shekel weighs twenty gerahs). The half shekel is to be an offering to the LORD.Everyone who crosses over to those numbered, from twenty years old and up, is to pay an offering to the LORD.The rich are not to increase it, and the poor are not to pay less than the half shekel when giving the offering of the LORD, to make atonement for your lives.You are to receive the atonement money from the Israelites and give it for the service of the tent of meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD, to make atonement for your lives.”

The LORD said to Moses:“ Say to the priests, the sons of Aaron– say to them,‘ For a dead person no priest is to defile himself among his people,except for his close relative who is near to him: his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother,and his virgin sister who is near to him, who has no husband; he may defile himself for her.He must not defile himself as a husband among his people so as to profane himself.Priests must not have a bald spot shaved on their head, they must not shave the corner of their beard, and they must not cut slashes in their body.“‘ They must be holy to their God, and they must not profane the name of their God, because they are the ones who present the LORD’s gifts, the food of their God. Therefore they must be holy.They must not take a wife defiled by prostitution, nor are they to take a wife divorced from her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.You must sanctify him because he presents the food of your God. He must be holy to you because I, the LORD who sanctifies you all, am holy.If a daughter of a priest profanes herself by engaging in prostitution, she is profaning her father. She must be burned to death.“‘ The high priest– who is greater than his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured, who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments– must neither dishevel the hair of his head nor tear his garments.He must not go where there is any dead person; he must not defile himself even for his father and his mother.He must not go out from the sanctuary and must not profane the sanctuary of his God, because the dedication of the anointing oil of his God is on him. I am the LORD.He must take a wife who is a virgin.He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one profaned by prostitution; he may only take a virgin from his people as a wife.He must not profane his children among his people, for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.’”The LORD spoke to Moses:“ Tell Aaron,‘ No man from your descendants throughout their generations who has a physical flaw is to approach to present the food of his God.Certainly no man who has a physical flaw is to approach: a blind man, or one who is lame, or one with a slit nose, or a limb too long,or a man who has had a broken leg or arm,or a hunchback, or a dwarf, or one with a spot in his eye, or a festering eruption, or a feverish rash, or a crushed testicle.No man from the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a physical flaw may step forward to present the LORD’s gifts; he has a physical flaw, so he must not step forward to present the food of his God.He may eat both the most holy and the holy food of his God,

And the priest is to make atonement for the whole community of the Israelites, and they will be forgiven, because it was unintentional and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire to the LORD, and their purification offering before the LORD, for their unintentional offense.

Then the one presenting the offering must slaughter the bull before the LORD, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, must present the blood and splash the blood against the sides of the altar which is at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

They are to eat those things by which atonement was made to consecrate and to set them apart, but no one else may eat them, for they are holy.

and the sons of Aaron, the priest, must put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire.Then the sons of Aaron, the priests, must arrange the parts with the head and the suet on the wood that is in the fire on the altar.Finally, the one presenting the offering must wash its entrails and its legs in water and the priest must offer all of it up in smoke on the altar– it is a burnt offering, a gift of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

The Levitical priests– indeed, the entire tribe of Levi– will have no allotment or inheritance with Israel; they may eat the burnt offerings of the LORD and of his inheritance.They will have no inheritance in the midst of their fellow Israelites; the LORD alone is their inheritance, just as he had told them.This shall be the priests’ fair allotment from the people who offer sacrifices, whether bull or sheep– they must give to the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.You must give them the best of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, as well as the best of your wool when you shear your flocks.For the LORD your God has chosen them and their sons from all your tribes to stand and serve in his name permanently.Suppose a Levite comes by his own free will from one of your villages, from any part of Israel where he is living, to the place the LORD choosesand serves in the name of the LORD his God like his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.He must eat the same share they do, despite any profits he may gain from the sale of his family’s inheritance.

So Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab as the LORD had said.

Every day you are to prepare a bull for a purification offering for atonement. You are to purge the altar by making atonement for it, and you are to anoint it to set it apart as holy.For seven days you are to make atonement for the altar and set it apart as holy. Then the altar will be most holy. Anything that touches the altar will be holy.

Then Moses said to Korah,“ You and all your company present yourselves before the LORD– you and they, and Aaron– tomorrow.And each of you take his censer, put incense in it, and then each of you present his censer before the LORD: 250 censers, along with you, and Aaron– each of you with his censer.”So everyone took his censer, put fire in it, and set incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.When Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, then the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole community.The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:“ Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said,“ O God, the God of the spirits of all people, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?”So the LORD spoke to Moses:“ Tell the community:‘ Get away from around the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’”Then Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him.And he said to the community,“ Move away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything they have, lest you be destroyed because of all their sins.”So they got away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side, and Dathan and Abiram came out and stationed themselves in the entrances of their tents with their wives, their children, and their toddlers.Then Moses said,“ This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will.If these men die a natural death, or if they share the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.But if the LORD does something entirely new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up along with all that they have, and they go down alive to the grave, then you will know that these men have despised the LORD!”When he had finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open,and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korah’s men, and all their goods.They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.All the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry, for they said,“ What if the earth swallows us too?”Then a fire went out from the LORD and devoured the 250 men who offered incense.( 17: 1) The LORD spoke to Moses:“ Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick up the censers out of the flame, for they are holy, and then scatter the coals of fire at a distance.As for the censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives, they must be made into hammered sheets for covering the altar, because they presented them before the LORD and sanctified them. They will become a sign to the Israelites.”So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers presented by those who had been burned up, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar.It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to burn incense before the LORD, that he might not become like Korah and his company– just as the LORD had spoken by the authority of Moses.But on the next day the whole community of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying,“ You have killed the LORD’s people!”When the community assembled against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting– and the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.Then Moses and Aaron stood before the tent of meeting.The LORD spoke to Moses:“ Get away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!” But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Take the censer, put burning coals from the altar in it, place incense on it, and go quickly into the assembly and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD– the plague has begun!”So Aaron did as Moses commanded and ran into the middle of the assembly, where the plague was just beginning among the people. So he placed incense on the coals and made atonement for the people.He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.Now 14,700 people died in the plague, in addition to those who died in the event with Korah.Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stopped.The LORD spoke to Moses:“ Speak to the Israelites, and receive from them a staff from each tribe, one from every tribal leader, twelve staffs; you must write each man’s name on his staff.You must write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi; for one staff is for the head of every tribe.You must place them in the tent of meeting before the ark of the covenant where I meet with you.And the staff of the man whom I choose will blossom; so I will rid myself of the complaints of the Israelites, which they murmur against you.”So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each leader, according to their tribes– twelve staffs; the staff of Aaron was among their staffs.Then Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the testimony.On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony– and the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted, and brought forth buds, and produced blossoms, and yielded almonds!So Moses brought out all the staffs from before the LORD to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his staff.The LORD said to Moses,“ Bring Aaron’s staff back before the testimony to be preserved for a sign to the rebels, so that you may bring their murmurings to an end before me, that they will not die.”So Moses did as the LORD commanded him– this is what he did.The Israelites said to Moses,“ We are bound to die! We perish, we all perish!( 17: 28) Anyone who even comes close to the tabernacle of the LORD will die! Are we all to die?”

So if perfection had in fact been possible through the Levitical priesthood– for on that basis the people received the law– what further need would there have been for another priest to arise, said to be in the order of Melchizedek and not in Aaron’s order?For when the priesthood changes, a change in the law must come as well.Yet the one these things are spoken about belongs to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever officiated at the altar.For it is clear that our Lord is descended from Judah, yet Moses said nothing about priests in connection with that tribe.

and if God is gracious to him and says,‘ Spare him from going down to the place of corruption, I have found a ransom for him,’

Then the LORD spoke to Moses:“ Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, the anointing oil, the sin offering bull, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread,and assemble the whole congregation at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.”So Moses did just as the LORD commanded him, and the congregation assembled at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.Then Moses said to the congregation:“ This is what the LORD has commanded to be done.”So Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.Then he put the tunic on Aaron, wrapped the sash around him, and clothed him with the robe. Next he put the ephod on him and placed on him the decorated band of the ephod, and fastened the ephod closely to him with the band.He then set the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim into the breastpiece.Finally, he set the turban on his head and attached the gold plate, the holy diadem, to the front of the turban just as the Lord had commanded Moses.Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and so consecrated them.

After Moses the LORD’s servant died, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant:
