But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Aaron and his sons after him brought the offerings. They sacrificed them on the altar of burnt offering. They also burned incense on the altar of incense. That was part of what they did in the Most Holy Room. That’s how they paid for the sin of Israel. They did everything just as Moses, the servant of God, had commanded.

But Aaron and his sons made offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense for all the work of the Most Holy Place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Only Aaron and his descendants served as priests. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, and they performed all the other duties related to the Most Holy Place. They made atonement for Israel by doing everything that Moses, the servant of God, had commanded them.

“ Now you shall make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide; the altar shall be square, and its height shall be three cubits.You shall make its horns on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it, and you shall overlay it with bronze.And you shall make its pails for removing its ashes, and its shovels, its basins, its forks, and its firepans; you shall make all its utensils of bronze.You shall also make for it a grating, a netting of bronze, and on the netting you shall make four bronze rings at its four corners.And you shall put it under the ledge of the altar, so that the netting will reach halfway up the altar.You shall also make carrying poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood and overlay them with bronze.Its poles shall be inserted into the rings, so that the poles will be on the two sides of the altar when it is carried.You shall make it hollow with planks; as it was shown to you on the mountain, so they shall make it.

“ Now you shall make an altar as a place for burning incense; you shall make it of acacia wood.Its length shall be a cubit, and its width a cubit; it shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits; its horns shall be of one piece with it.You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and its sides all around, and its horns; and you shall make a gold molding all around for it.You shall also make two gold rings for it under its molding; you shall make them on its two sides— on opposite sides— and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it.And you shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.You shall put this altar in front of the veil that is near the ark of the testimony, in front of the atoning cover that is over the ark of the testimony, where I will meet with you.Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when he trims the lamps.

He shall also do with the bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; he shall do the same with it. So the priest shall make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.

However, Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; he shall make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying,“ When you take a census of the sons of Israel to count them, then each one of them shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you count them, so that there will be no plague among them when you count them.This is what everyone who is counted shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary( the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel as a contribution to the Lord.Everyone who is counted, from twenty years old and over, shall give the contribution to the Lord.The rich shall not pay more, and the poor shall not pay less, than the half shekel, when you give the contribution to the Lord to make atonement for yourselves.And you shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel and give it for the service of the tent of meeting, so that it may be a memorial for the sons of Israel before the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.”

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them:‘ No one shall defile himself for a dead person among his people,except for his relatives who are nearest to him, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, and his brother,also for his virgin sister who is near to him because she has not had a husband; for her, he may defile himself.He shall not defile himself as a relative by marriage among his people, so as to profane himself.They shall not shave any area on their heads bald, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts in their flesh.They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, because they present the offerings by fire to the Lord, the food of their God; so they shall be holy.They shall not take a woman who is a prostitute and profaned, nor shall they take a woman divorced from her husband; for he is holy to his God.You shall consecrate him, therefore, because he offers the food of your God. He shall be holy to you; for I the Lord, who sanctifies you, am holy.Also the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by prostitution, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.‘ The priest who is highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes;nor shall he approach any dead person, nor defile himself even for his father or his mother;nor shall he leave the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am the Lord.He shall take a wife in her virginity.A widow, or a divorced woman, or one who is profaned by prostitution, these he shall not take; but rather he is to marry a virgin of his own people,so that he will not profane his children among his people; for I am the Lord who sanctifies him.’ ”Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Speak to Aaron, saying,‘ None of your descendants throughout their generations who has an impairment shall approach to offer the food of his God.For no one who has an impairment shall approach: a man who is blind, or one who limps, or one who has a slit nose, or one with any conspicuous feature,or someone who has a broken foot or broken hand,or a contorted back, or one who is a dwarf, or has a spot in his eye, or a festering rash or scabs, or crushed testicles.No man among the descendants of Aaron the priest who has an impairment is to come forward to offer the Lord’s offerings by fire; since he has an impairment, he shall not come forward to offer the food of his God.He may eat the food of his God, both of the most holy and of the holy,

Then the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and they will be forgiven; for it was an unintentional wrong, and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord, for their unintentional wrong.

Then he shall slaughter the bull before the Lord; and Aaron’s sons the priests shall offer up the blood and sprinkle the blood around on the altar that is at the doorway of the tent of meeting.

So they shall eat those things by which atonement was made at their ordination and consecration; but a layman shall not eat them, because they are holy.

And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire.Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, with the head and the suet, on the wood which is on the fire that is on the altar.Its entrails, however, and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer all of it up in smoke on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to the Lord.

“ The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall not have a portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the Lord’s offerings by fire and His property.They shall not have an inheritance among their countrymen; the Lord is their inheritance, as He promised them.“ Now this shall be the priests’ portion from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, either an ox or a sheep: they shall give the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach.You shall give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece of your sheep.For the Lord your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand to serve in the name of the Lord always.“ Now if a Levite comes from any of your towns throughout Israel where he resides, and he comes whenever he desires to the place which the Lord chooses,then he shall serve in the name of the Lord his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the Lord.They shall eat equal portions, except for what they receive from the sale of their fathers’ estates.

So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, in accordance with the word of the Lord.

Each day you shall offer a bull as a sin offering for atonement, and you shall purify the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to consecrate it.For seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and consecrate it; then the altar shall be most holy, and whatever touches the altar shall be holy.

Moses said to Korah,“ You and all your group be present before the Lord tomorrow, you and they along with Aaron.And each of you take his censer and put incense on it, and each of you bring his censer before the Lord, 250 censers; also you and Aaron shall each bring his censer.”So they took, each one his own censer, and put fire on it, and placed incense on it; and they stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.So Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,“ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, so that I may consume them instantly.”But they fell on their faces and said,“ God, the God of the spirits of humanity, when one person sins, will You be angry with the entire congregation?”Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Speak to the congregation, saying,‘ Get away from the areas around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’ ”Then Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, with the elders of Israel following him,and he spoke to the congregation, saying,“ Get away now from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away in all their sin!”So they moved away from the areas around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrances of their tents, along with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.Then Moses said,“ By this you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these deeds; for it is not my doing.If these men die the death of all mankind, or if they suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.But if the Lord brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them with everything that is theirs, and they descend alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have been disrespectful to the Lord.”And as he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open;and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, and all the people who belonged to Korah with all their possessions.So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.Then all Israel who were around them fled at their outcry, for they said,“ The earth might swallow us!”Fire also came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, that he shall pick up the censers from the midst of the burned area, because they are holy; and you are to scatter the burning coals further away.As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their own lives, have them made into hammered sheets as plating for the altar, since they did present them before the Lord and they are holy; and they shall serve as a sign to the sons of Israel.”So the priest Eleazar took the bronze censers which the men who were burned had offered, and they hammered them out as plating for the altar,as a reminder to the sons of Israel so that no layman, anyone who was not of the descendants of Aaron, would approach to burn incense before the Lord; then he would not become like Korah and his group— just as the Lord had spoken to him through Moses.But on the next day all the congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying,“ You are the ones who have caused the death of the Lord’s people!”It came about, however, when the congregation had assembled against Moses and Aaron, that they turned toward the tent of meeting, and behold, the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord appeared.Then Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting,and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Get away from among this congregation so that I may consume them instantly.” Then they fell on their faces.And Moses said to Aaron,“ Take your censer and put fire in it from the altar, and place incense on it; then bring it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the Lord, the plague has begun!”Then Aaron took it just as Moses had spoken, and he ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had begun among the people. So he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.And he took his stand between the dead and the living, so that the plague was brought to a halt.But those who died by the plague were 14,700 in number, besides those who died on account of Korah.Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, for the plague had been brought to a halt.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Speak to the sons of Israel, and obtain from them a staff for each father’s household: twelve staffs, from all their leaders for their fathers’ households. You shall write each man’s name on his staff,and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi; for there is to be one staff for the head of each of their fathers’ households.You shall then leave them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony, where I meet with you.And it will come about that the staff of the man whom I choose will sprout. So I will relieve Myself of the grumblings of the sons of Israel, who are grumbling against you.”So Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and all their leaders gave him a staff, one for each leader, for their fathers’ households, twelve staffs in all, with the staff of Aaron among their staffs.Then Moses left the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the testimony.Now on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, Aaron’s staff for the house of Levi had sprouted and produced buds and bloomed with blossoms, and it yielded ripe almonds.Moses then brought out all the staffs from the presence of the Lord to all the sons of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his staff.But the Lord said to Moses,“ Put the staff of Aaron back in front of the testimony to be kept as a sign against the rebels, so that you may put an end to their grumblings against Me and they do not die.”Moses did so; just as the Lord had commanded him, so he did.Then the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying,“ Behold, we are passing away, we are perishing, we are all perishing!Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, must die. Are we to perish completely?”

So if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood( for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron?For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.For the one about whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses said nothing concerning priests.

And he is gracious to him, and says,‘ Free him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom’;

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread,and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.”So Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting,Moses said to the congregation,“ This is the thing which the Lord has commanded us to do.”Then Moses had Aaron and his sons come near, and he washed them with water.Then he put the tunic on Aaron and wrapped his waist with the sash, and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him; and he wrapped his waist with the artistic band of the ephod, with which he fitted it to him.He then placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim.He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.Moses then took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything that was in it, and consecrated them.

Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying,
