Now therefore why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”

And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said,“ O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

But Geshur and Aram took from them Havvoth-jair, Kenath, and its villages, sixty towns. All these were descendants of Machir, the father of Gilead.

So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

Absalom answered Joab,“ Behold, I sent word to you,‘ Come here, that I may send you to the king, to ask,“ Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still.” Now therefore let me go into the presence of the king, and if there is guilt in me, let him put me to death.’”

and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

And her brother Absalom said to her,“ Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house.When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar.After two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.And Absalom came to the king and said,“ Behold, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.”But the king said to Absalom,“ No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him, but he would not go but gave him his blessing.Then Absalom said,“ If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him,“ Why should he go with you?”But Absalom pressed him until he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.Then Absalom commanded his servants,“ Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you,‘ Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.”

For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying,‘ If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to the Lord.’”

Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying,“ I will be king.” And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

Joab said,“ I will not waste time like this with you.” And he took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak.

Now therefore as the Lord lives, who has established me and placed me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today.”So King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he struck him down, and he died.

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar that is in the King’s Valley, for he said,“ I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom’s monument to this day.

Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her.
