那時以東人多益站在掃羅的臣僕中，回答說：「我曾看見耶西的兒子往挪伯去，到了亞希突的兒子亞希米勒那裏。亞希米勒為他求問耶和華，給他食物，又把非利士人歌利亞的刀給了他。」王就派人把亞希突的兒子亞希米勒祭司和他父親的全家，就是在挪伯的祭司都召了來，他們都來到王那裏。掃羅說：「亞希突的兒子，聽着！」他說：「我主，我在這裏。」掃羅對他說：「你為甚麼與耶西的兒子結黨害我，把食物和刀給他，又為他求問神，使他起來謀害我，像今日這樣？」亞希米勒回答王說：「王的眾臣僕中有誰比大衛忠心呢？他是王的女婿，又是你的侍衛長，並且是你宮中受敬重的人。我今日才開始為他求問神嗎？絕非如此！王不要歸罪於我和我父全家，因為這事，無論大小，僕人都不知情。」王說：「亞希米勒，你和你父全家都是該死的！」王吩咐左右的侍衛說：「你們轉身去殺耶和華的祭司吧！因為他們幫助大衛，知道大衛逃跑卻不告訴我。」但王的臣僕都不願動手殺耶和華的祭司。王吩咐多益說：「你轉身去殺祭司吧！」以東人多益就轉身去殺祭司，那日殺了穿細麻布以弗得的，共八十五人，又用刀把祭司城挪伯中的男女、孩童和吃奶的都殺了，又用刀殺了牛、羊和驢子。亞希突的兒子亞希米勒有一個兒子逃脫了；他名叫亞比亞他，逃到大衛那裏。亞比亞他把掃羅殺耶和華祭司的事告訴大衛。大衛對亞比亞他說：「那日我見以東人多益在那裏，就知道他一定會告訴掃羅。你父的全家喪命，都是因我的緣故。你可以住在我這裏，不要懼怕。因為尋索你命的也要尋索我的命，你在我這裏可得保護。」
