the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

The Ammonite commanders spoke to Hanun. They said,“ David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it.”

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun,“ Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”

the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun,“ Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?”

But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?”

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”

It does not dishonor others, it is not self- seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (niv)

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.He asked them,“ What is your advice? When they sent men to spy out Bethel( formerly called Luz),the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him,“ Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.” (niv)

But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said,“ Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men? (niv)

Achish answered,“ I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders have said,‘ He must not go up with us into battle.’ (niv)

When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their fellow Danites asked them,“ How did you find things?”They answered,“ Come on, let’s attack them! We have seen the land, and it is very good. Aren’t you going to do something? Don’t hesitate to go there and take it over.When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever.” (niv)

Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them,“ You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”“ No, my lord,” they answered.“ Your servants have come to buy food.We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”“ No!” he said to them.“ You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”But they replied,“ Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”Joseph said to them,“ It is just as I told you: You are spies!And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. So the Danites sent five of their leading men from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all the Danites. They told them,“ Go, explore the land.” So they entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night. (niv)

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim.“ Go, look over the land,” he said,“ especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.The king of Jericho was told,“ Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.”So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab:“ Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” (niv)
