the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

The Ammonite commanders spoke to Hanun. They said,“ David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it.”

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun,“ Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”

But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?”

And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

Joseph remembered his dreams about them and said to them,“ You are spies. You have come to see the weakness of the land.”“ No, my lord. Your servants have come to buy food,” they said.“ We are all sons of one man. We are honest; your servants are not spies.”“ No,” he said to them.“ You have come to see the weakness of the land.”But they replied,“ We, your servants, were twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The rest of you will be imprisoned so that your words can be tested to see if they are true. If they are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”So Joseph imprisoned them together for three days.On the third day Joseph said to them,“ I fear God— do this and you will live.

Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from the Acacia Grove, saying,“ Go and scout the land, especially Jericho.” So they left, and they came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab, and stayed there.The king of Jericho was told,“ Look, some of the Israelite men have come here tonight to investigate the land.”Then the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab and said,“ Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they came to investigate the entire land.”
