How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands.Whenever the Lord raised up a judge over Israel, he was with that judge and rescued the people from their enemies throughout the judge’s lifetime. For the Lord took pity on his people, who were burdened by oppression and suffering.

There were no blacksmiths in the land of Israel in those days. The Philistines wouldn’t allow them for fear they would make swords and spears for the Hebrews.So whenever the Israelites needed to sharpen their plowshares, picks, axes, or sickles, they had to take them to a Philistine blacksmith.

You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents.For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.

Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel,camping in the land and destroying crops as far away as Gaza. They left the Israelites with nothing to eat, taking all the sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys.These enemy hordes, coming with their livestock and tents, were as thick as locusts; they arrived on droves of camels too numerous to count. And they stayed until the land was stripped bare.So Israel was reduced to starvation by the Midianites. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help.

Then the Lord burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to King Cushan rishathaim of Aram naharaim. And the Israelites served Cushan rishathaim for eight years.

Sisera, who had 900 iron chariots, ruthlessly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help.
