As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.”

Listen for the sound of marching in the tops of the trees. Then move out to fight. The sound will mean that I have gone out in front of you. I will strike down the Philistine army.”

And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”

When you hear a sound like marching feet in the tops of the poplar trees, go out and attack! That will be the signal that God is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army.”

There is a loud noise on the mountains– it sounds like a large army! There is great commotion among the kingdoms– nations are being assembled! The LORD who commands armies is mustering forces for battle.

Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.

So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence,for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort– for the sake of his good pleasure– is God.

That night the LORD said to Gideon,“ Get up! Attack the camp, for I am handing it over to you.

The Hebrews are coming out of the holes in which they hid themselves.”Then the men of the garrison said to Jonathan and his armor bearer,“ Come on up to us so we can teach you a thing or two!” Then Jonathan said to his armor bearer,“ Come up behind me, for the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel!”Jonathan crawled up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer following behind him. Jonathan struck down the Philistines, while his armor bearer came along behind him and killed them.In this initial skirmish Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty men in an area that measured half an acre.Then fear overwhelmed those who were in the camp, those who were in the field, all the army in the garrison, and the raiding bands. They trembled and the ground shook. This fear was caused by God.Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin looked on as the crowd of soldiers seemed to melt away first in one direction and then in another.So Saul said to the army that was with him,“ Muster the troops and see who is no longer with us.” When they mustered the troops, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.So Saul said to Ahijah,“ Bring near the ephod,” for he was at that time wearing the ephod.While Saul spoke to the priest, the panic in the Philistines’ camp was becoming greater and greater. So Saul said to the priest,“ Withdraw your hand!”Saul and all the army that was with him assembled and marched into battle, where they found the Philistines in total panic killing one another with their swords.The Hebrews who had earlier gone over to the Philistine side joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.When all the Israelites who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, they too pursued them in battle.

“‘ As for the ones who remain among you, I will bring despair into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a blowing leaf will pursue them, and they will flee as one who flees the sword and fall down even though there is no pursuer.

This is what the LORD says to his chosen one, to Cyrus, whose right hand I hold in order to subdue nations before him, and disarm kings, to open doors before him, so gates remain unclosed:“ I will go before you and level mountains. Bronze doors I will shatter and iron bars I will hack through.

When Gideon heard the report of the dream and its interpretation, he praised God. Then he went back to the Israelite camp and said,“ Get up, for the LORD is handing the Midianite army over to you!”

I will certainly gather all of you, O Jacob, I will certainly assemble those Israelites who remain. I will bring them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in the middle of a pasture; they will be so numerous that they will make a lot of noise.The one who can break through barriers will lead them out they will break out, pass through the gate, and leave. Their king will advance before them, The LORD himself will lead them.

The LORD had caused the Syrian camp to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a large army. Then they said to one another,“ Look, the king of Israel has paid the kings of the Hittites and Egypt to attack us!”
