He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine,[ that is] better than thou.

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him[ to be] captain over his people, because thou hast not kept[ that] which the LORD commanded thee.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour,[ even] to David:

And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

And the LORD said unto the children of Israel,[ Did] not[ I deliver you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

And these[ are] the numbers of the bands[ that were] ready armed to the war,[ and] came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.

So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all[ thy] children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.And he sent, and brought him in. Now he[ was] ruddy,[ and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this[ is] he.Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but[ it is] in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn[ yourselves] from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith?[ or] shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake[ itself] against them that lift it up,[ or] as if the staff should lift up[ itself, as if it were] no wood.
