So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium

夫掃羅之死、因其干犯耶和華、不遵其命、且請示於憑鬼者、

掃羅犯罪、違耶和華命、不詢於耶和華、乃問於憑卜神者、故耶和華殺之、移其國祚、以畀耶西之子大闢。

如是、掃羅死、因其獲罪於主、不遵守主命、且因問交鬼之婦、而不詢主、主殺之、移其國歸耶西子大衛、

Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance,

Saul died because he wasn’t faithful to the Lord. He didn’t obey the word of the Lord. He even asked for advice from a person who gets messages from people who have died.

So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance.

For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you.But you must be blameless before the Lord your God.The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things.”

“ How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed.“ You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

Saul then said to his advisers,“ Find a woman who is a medium, so I can go and ask her what to do.” His advisers replied,“ There is a medium at Endor.”So Saul disguised himself by wearing ordinary clothing instead of his royal robes. Then he went to the woman’s home at night, accompanied by two of his men.“ I have to talk to a man who has died,” he said.“ Will you call up his spirit for me?”“ Are you trying to get me killed?” the woman demanded.“ You know that Saul has outlawed all the mediums and all who consult the spirits of the dead. Why are you setting a trap for me?”But Saul took an oath in the name of the Lord and promised,“ As surely as the Lord lives, nothing bad will happen to you for doing this.”Finally, the woman said,“ Well, whose spirit do you want me to call up?”“ Call up Samuel,” Saul replied.When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed,“ You’ve deceived me! You are Saul!”“ Don’t be afraid!” the king told her.“ What do you see?”“ I see a god coming up out of the earth,” she said.“ What does he look like?” Saul asked.“ He is an old man wrapped in a robe,” she replied. Saul realized it was Samuel, and he fell to the ground before him.“ Why have you disturbed me by calling me back?” Samuel asked Saul.“ Because I am in deep trouble,” Saul replied.“ The Philistines are at war with me, and God has left me and won’t reply by prophets or dreams. So I have called for you to tell me what to do.”But Samuel replied,“ Why ask me, since the Lord has left you and has become your enemy?The Lord has done just as he said he would. He has torn the kingdom from you and given it to your rival, David.The Lord has done this to you today because you refused to carry out his fierce anger against the Amalekites.What’s more, the Lord will hand you and the army of Israel over to the Philistines tomorrow, and you and your sons will be here with me. The Lord will bring down the entire army of Israel in defeat.”Saul fell full length on the ground, paralyzed with fright because of Samuel’s words. He was also faint with hunger, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night.

Someone may say to you,“ Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?

One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future. She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting,“ These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her,“ I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.
