Why Have You Forsaken Me?
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

122:1 Cited Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so 22:1 ver. 11far from saving me, from the words of my 22:1 Ps. 32:3; 38:8; Job 3:24; Isa. 59:11; [Heb. 5:7]groaning?
2O my God, I cry by 22:2 Ps. 88:1day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

3Yet you are 22:3 Lev. 19:2holy,
22:3 [Ps. 80:1; 99:1] enthroned on 22:3 [Ps. 9:11, 14; 65:1; 102:21; 147:12]the praises22:3 Or dwelling in the praises of Israel.
4In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5To you they 22:5 See Judg. 3:9cried and were rescued;
in you they 22:5 Ps. 25:2; 31:1; 71:1; Isa. 49:23; Rom. 9:33trusted and were not put to shame.

6But I am 22:6 Job 25:6; Isa. 41:14a worm and not a man,
22:6 Ps. 69:19; 109:25scorned by mankind and 22:6 Isa. 49:7; 53:3despised by the people.
7All who see me 22:7 See Matt. 27:39-43; Mark 15:29-32; Luke 23:35, 36mock me;
they make mouths at me; they 22:7 Ps. 109:25; [Ps. 44:14; 2 Kgs. 19:21; Isa. 37:22; Lam. 2:15]wag their heads;
822:8 [Ps. 37:5; Prov. 16:3] “He trusts in the Lord; let him 22:8 Ps. 91:14deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he 22:8 Ps. 18:19; Matt. 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22delights in him!”

9Yet you are he who 22:9 Ps. 71:6took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10On you was I cast from my birth,
and from 22:10 Isa. 46:3; 49:1; Gal. 1:15my mother’s womb you have been my God.
11Be not 22:11 See ver. 1; Ps. 10:1far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is 22:11 Ps. 107:12; 2 Kgs. 14:26; Isa. 63:5none to help.

12Many bulls encompass me;
22:12 [Ps. 68:30 (Heb.)] strong bulls of 22:12 Amos 4:1Bashan surround me;
13they 22:13 Ps. 35:21; Job 16:10; Lam. 2:16; 3:46open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

14I am 22:14 [Lam. 2:11] poured out like water,
and all my bones are 22:14 [Dan. 5:6] out of joint;
my 22:14 [Job 23:16; Nah. 2:10]; See Josh. 2:11heart is like 22:14 See Ps. 68:2wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15my strength is 22:15 Prov. 17:22dried up like a potsherd,
and my 22:15 [John 19:28; See Job 29:10]tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16For 22:16 [Phil. 3:2; Rev. 22:15] dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers 22:16 Ps. 88:17encircles me;
they have 22:16 Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; 24:40; John 19:23, 37; 20:25; [Zech. 12:10]pierced my hands and feet22:16 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts like a lion [they are at] my hands and feet
17I can count all my bones—
they 22:17 Luke 23:35stare and gloat over me;
1822:18 Cited John 19:24; [Matt. 27:35; Luke 23:34]they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

19But you, O Lord, 22:19 [See ver. 11above] do not be far off!
O you my help, 22:19 Ps. 38:22come quickly to my aid!
20Deliver my soul from the sword,

but has heard, when he 22:24 Heb. 5:7cried to him.
