Judgment on the Philistines

1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet 47:1 ch. 25:20; Ezek. 25:15, 16; Zeph. 2:5concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down 47:1 Amos 1:6, 7; Zeph. 2:4Gaza.

2“Thus says the Lord:

47:2 [ch. 46:7, 8; Isa. 8:7] Behold, waters are rising 47:2 See ch. 1:13out of the north,

47:2 [ch. 46:7, 8; Isa. 8:7] and shall become an overflowing torrent;

they shall overflow 47:2 [ch. 8:16]the land and all that fills it,

the city and those who dwell in it.

Men shall cry out,

and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.

3At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,

47:3 Nah. 3:2at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,

the fathers 47:3 ch. 46:5look not back to their children,

so feeble are their hands,

4because of the day that is coming to destroy

all 47:4 [See ver. 1above] the Philistines,

to cut off from 47:4 Isa. 23:1, 2; Joel 3:4; See ch. 25:22Tyre and Sidon

every helper that remains.

For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,

47:4 Amos 1:8the remnant of the coastland of 47:4 Gen. 10:14; Amos 9:7Caphtor.

547:5 [ch. 48:37; Isa. 3:24] Baldness has come upon Gaza;

47:5 ch. 25:20; [Judg. 1:18] Ashkelon has perished.

O remnant of their valley,

47:5 [ch. 48:37]how long will you gash yourselves?

647:6 Deut. 32:41; See Ezek. 21:3-5Ah, sword of the Lord!

How long till you are quiet?

Put yourself into your scabbard;

rest and be still!

7How can it47:7 Septuagint, Vulgate; Hebrew you be quiet

47:7 [Ezek. 14:17] when the Lord has given it a charge?
