The Lord Promises Peace
1The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still 33:1 See ch. 32:2shut up in the court of the guard:
2“Thus says 33:2 [Isa. 37:26] the Lord who made the earth,33:2 Septuagint; Hebrew it the Lord who formed it to establish it—33:2 [ch. 16:21; Ex. 6:3; Ps. 83:18; Amos 4:13]the Lord is his name:
333:3 ch. 29:12; Ps. 91:15Call to me and I will answer you, 33:3 Isa. 48:6and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.
4For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to make a defense against 33:4 ch. 32:24the siege mounds and against the sword:
5They are coming in 33:5 [ch. 32:5] to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them33:5 That is, the torn-down houses with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down 33:5 Ezek. 22:20in my anger and my wrath, 33:5 Deut. 31:17, 18for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil.
633:6 ch. 30:17Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.
733:7 See ch. 30:3I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, 33:7 See ch. 24:6and rebuild them as they were 33:7 Isa. 1:26at first.
833:8 Ezek. 36:25; [Ps. 51:2, 7; Heb. 9:13, 14] I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, 33:8 See ch. 31:34and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me.
933:9 See ch. 13:11And this city33:9 Hebrew And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. They shall 33:9 [Ps. 130:4; Isa. 60:5]fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it.
33:11 ch. 30:19; Lev. 7:12; Ps. 107:22“‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts,
for the Lord is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!’
33:11 [See ver. 7above]For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord.
12“Thus says the Lord of hosts: 33:12 [Ezek. 36:11] In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be 33:12 [ch. 31:24; 50:19; Isa. 65:10; Ezek. 34:14, 15] habitations of shepherds 33:12 Song 1:7resting their flocks.
1333:13 See ch. 17:26In the cities of the hill country, 33:13 See ch. 17:26in the cities of the Shephelah, 33:13 See ch. 17:26and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, 33:13 See ch. 17:26the places about Jerusalem, 33:13 See ch. 17:26and in the cities of Judah, 33:13 [Lev. 27:32] flocks shall again pass under the hands 33:13 [John 10:3]of the one who counts them, says the Lord.
The Lord’s Eternal Covenant with David
1433:14 For ver. 14-16, see ch. 23:5, 6“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when 33:14 ch. 29:10I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
17“For thus says the Lord: 33:17 2 Sam. 7:16; 1 Kgs. 2:4; Ps. 89:3, 4David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,
1833:18 [Isa. 66:21]and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”
19The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
2033:20 For ver. 20-26, see ch. 31:36, 37“Thus says the Lord: 33:20 ver. 25; [Isa. 54:9] If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, 33:20 Gen. 8:22; Ps. 72:5so that day and night will not come at their appointed time,
2133:21 Ps. 89:34then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers.
22As 33:22 Gen. 22:17the host of heaven cannot be numbered and 33:22 Gen. 22:17the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”
23The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
24“Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight.
