The Call of Jeremiah
4Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
and before you were born 1:5 [John 10:36] I consecrated you;
6Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, 1:6 [Ex. 4:10] I do not know how to speak, 1:6 [1 Kgs. 3:7]for I am only a youth.”
7But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
declares the Lord.”
“Behold, I have put 1:9 ch. 5:14my words in your mouth.
1:10 ch. 18:7; 31:28; 45:4; [2 Cor. 10:4, 5]to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”
11And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 1:11 [Amos 7:8]“Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond1:11 Almond sounds like the Hebrew for watching (compare verse 12) branch.”
12Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”
13The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see 1:13 Ezek. 24:3; [Ezek. 22:21] a boiling pot, facing away 1:13 ch. 4:6; 6:1; 10:22from the north.”
14Then the Lord said to me, 1:14 [See ver. 13above]“Out of the north disaster1:14 The Hebrew word can mean evil, harm, or disaster, depending on the context; so throughout Jeremiah shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land.
15For behold, 1:15 [ch. 25:9] I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord, 1:15 [ch. 39:3; 43:10]and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah.
16And 1:16 ch. 4:12I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil 1:16 ch. 19:4; 22:9in forsaking me. 1:16 ch. 7:9; 44:3They have made offerings to other gods and 1:16 ch. 25:6, 7; Isa. 2:8; Acts 7:41worshiped the works of their own hands.
17But you, 1:17 [1 Kgs. 18:46; 1 Pet. 1:13] dress yourself for work;1:17 Hebrew gird up your loins arise, and 1:17 ver. 7say to them everything that I command you. 1:17 ver. 8; Ezek. 3:9Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them.
