The Temple’s Chambers

1Then he led me out into 42:1 ch. 40:17the outer court, 42:1 ch. 40:20toward the north, and he brought me to 42:1 ch. 40:17the chambers that were opposite 42:1 ver. 10, 13; ch. 41:12, 13the separate yard and opposite 42:1 ch. 41:12, 15the building on the north.

2The length of the building whose door faced north was 42:2 [ch. 41:13] a hundred cubits,42:2 A cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters; a long cubit (see 40:5) was about 21 inches or 53 centimeters and 42:2 [ver. 8]the breadth fifty cubits.

3Facing 42:3 ch. 41:10the twenty cubits that belonged to the inner court, and facing 42:3 ch. 40:17the pavement that belonged to the outer court, was 42:3 [ver. 5; 41:15, 16]gallery42:3 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; also verse 5 against gallery in three stories.

4And 42:4 [ch. 46:19] before the chambers was a passage inward, ten cubits wide and 42:4 [ver. 11]a hundred cubits long,42:4 Septuagint, Syriac; Hebrew and a way of one cubit and 42:4 [ch. 46:19] their doors were on the north.

5Now the upper chambers were narrower, for the galleries took more away from them than from the lower and middle chambers of the building.

6For they were in three stories, and they had no pillars like the pillars of the courts. Thus the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and the middle ones.

7And 42:7 [ver. 10, 12] there was a wall outside parallel to the chambers, toward the outer court, opposite the chambers, 42:7 [ver. 2]fifty cubits long.

8For the chambers on the outer court were fifty cubits long, while those opposite 42:8 ch. 41:1, 21, 23the nave42:8 Or temple were 42:8 [ch. 41:13, 14]a hundred cubits long.

9Below these chambers was 42:9 ch. 44:5; 46:19an entrance on the east side, as one enters them from the outer court.

10In the thickness of 42:10 [ver. 7] the wall of the court, on the south42:10 Septuagint; Hebrew east also, opposite 42:10 [ver. 1] the yard and opposite 42:10 [ver. 1] the building, there were 42:10 See ch. 40:17chambers

11with 42:11 [ver. 4]a passage in front of them. They were similar to the chambers on the north, of the same length and breadth, with the same exits42:11 Hebrew and all their exits and arrangements and 42:11 [ver. 4]doors,

12as were the entrances of the chambers on the south. There was an entrance at the beginning of the passage, the passage before 42:12 [See ver. 10above]the corresponding wall on the east as one enters them.42:12 The meaning of the Hebrew verse is uncertain

13Then he said to me, “The north chambers and the south chambers opposite 42:13 [See ver. 10above] the yard are the holy chambers, 42:13 ch. 40:46where the priests who approach the Lord42:13 Lev. 6:16, 26; 10:13; 24:9shall eat the 42:13 Num. 18:9most holy offerings. There they shall put the most holy offerings—42:13 Num. 18:9the grain offering, 42:13 ch. 40:39the sin offering, and 42:13 ch. 40:39the guilt offering—for the place is holy.

14When the priests enter the Holy Place, they shall not go out of it into the outer court 42:14 ch. 44:19; Lev. 6:11without laying there the garments in which they minister, for these are holy. 42:14 ch. 44:19; Lev. 6:11They shall put on other garments before they go near to that which is for the people.”

15Now when he had finished measuring the interior of the temple area, he led me out by 42:15 See ch. 43:1the gate that faced east, and measured the temple area all around.

16He measured the east side with 42:16 [ch. 40:3]the measuring reed, 500 cubits by the measuring reed all around.

17He measured the north side, 500 cubits by the measuring reed all around.

18He measured the south side, 500 cubits by the measuring reed.

19Then he turned to the west side and measured, 500 cubits by the measuring reed.

20He measured it on the four sides. It had 42:20 ch. 40:5a wall around it, 42:20 [ch. 45:2; Rev. 21:16] 500 cubits long and 42:20 [ch. 45:2; Rev. 21:16] 500 cubits broad, 42:20 [ch. 22:26; 43:12; 44:23; 48:15]to make a separation between the holy and the common.
