Warning Against Idolatry

1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,10:1 Or brothers and sisters that our fathers were all under 10:1 See Ex. 13:21the cloud, and all 10:1 See Ex. 14:22passed through the sea,

2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

3and 10:3 Ex. 16:15, 35; Deut. 8:3; Neh. 9:15, 20; Ps. 78:24all ate the same 10:3 Ps. 78:25; 105:40; John 6:31spiritual food,

4and 10:4 See Ex. 17:6all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for 10:5 Num. 14:29, 37; 26:64, 65; Ps. 106:26; Heb. 3:17; Jude 5they were overthrown10:5 Or were laid low in the wilderness.

13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. 10:13 See ch. 1:9God is faithful, and 10:13 [Dan. 3:17]; See 2 Pet. 2:9he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14Therefore, my beloved, 10:14 ver. 7flee from idolatry.

19What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that 10:19 See ch. 8:4an idol is anything?

20No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice 10:20 Deut. 32:17they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.

29I do not mean 10:29 [ch. 8:9-12] your conscience, but his. For 10:29 [ch. 9:19; Rom. 14:16]why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience?

30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that 10:30 Rom. 14:6; 1 Tim. 4:3, 4for which I give thanks?

31So, whether you eat or drink, or 10:31 Col. 3:17; 1 Pet. 4:11whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
