The Living Stone and a Holy People
1So rid yourselves of Rm 13:12 all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. 2Co 12:20

4Coming to Him, a living stone — rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God —
5you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God Rm 12:1; Heb 13:15 through Jesus Christ.
6For it is contained in Scripture:
Look! I lay a stone in Zion, Ps 9:11; Heb 12:22
a chosen and honored Or valuable cornerstone, Lit head of the corner Eph 2:20
and the one who believes in Him

7So honor will come to you who believe, but for the unbelieving,
The stone that the builders rejected —
this One has become the cornerstone, Ps 118:22; Mt 21:42; Lk 20:17; Ac 4:11 Ps 118:22

A stone to stumble over, Or a stone causing stumbling

They stumble because they disobey the message; they were destined Ac 2:23; 4:27-28; Rm 9:22; 11:7; Jd 4 for this.

of the One who called you out of darkness

10Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
you had not received mercy, Mt 5:7; Mk 5:19; Lk 1:50
but now you have received mercy.
A Call to Good Works
11Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and temporary residents 1Pt 1:1 to abstain 1Tm 4:3 from fleshly Rm 7:23; Php 3:3 desires that war against you. Or against the soul Gl 5:17; Jms 4:1
12Conduct 2Pt 3:11 yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, Or among the nations, or among the pagans so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do what is evil, they will, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of visitation. The day when God intervenes in human history, either in grace or in judgment Is 10:3; Jr 6:15; 8:12; 10:15; Lk 1:68; 7:16; 19:44
13Submit Rm 13:1-7; Ti 3:1 to every human authority Or creature because of the Lord, whether to the Emperor Lit king as the supreme authority Rm 13:1
14or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good.
15For it is God’s will Gl 1:4; Eph 1:9 that you silence the ignorance 1Pt 3:16 of foolish people by doing good.
16As God’s slaves, Rm 1:1; Ti 1:1; Rv 2:20 live as free people, but don’t use your freedom as a way to conceal evil. 1Co 14:20

Submission of Slaves to Masters
18Household slaves, submit with all fear Rm 13:3,7 to your masters, Eph 6:5; Col 3:22; Ti 2:9; Jd 4 not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel. Or unscrupulous ; lit crooked Php 2:15

20For what credit is there if you sin and are punished, and you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer, 1Pt 4:14 if you endure it, this brings favor with God.
21For you were called to this,

leaving you an example, Jn 13:15
so that you should follow Jn 8:12 in His steps.

when He was suffering,
He did not threaten
